The Great Dictator is a 1940 political satire written, directed and produced by Charlie Chaplin, his first true sound film. Chaplin plays Adenoid Hynkel, the ranting dictator of Tomainia and a merciless parody of Adolf Hitler, and also a humble Jewish barber who returns from the First World War to find his ghetto under persecution. Paulette Goddard plays Hannah, and Jack Oakie plays the rival dictator Napaloni. Through a case of mistaken identity, the barber ends up delivering one of the most famous speeches in cinema.
