Robert Wise's 1965 musical, based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage show, stars Julie Andrews as Maria, a high-spirited young woman from a Salzburg abbey who is sent to be governess to the seven children of widowed naval officer Captain Georg von Trapp, played by Christopher Plummer. Her songs win over the children and slowly soften their father, while the shadow of the coming Nazi annexation of Austria falls over the family. A beloved family classic and Best Picture winner.
