Chinatown is a 1974 neo-noir mystery directed by Roman Polanski from a celebrated screenplay by Robert Towne. Jack Nicholson plays J.J. Gittes, a 1930s Los Angeles private detective who takes on what looks like a simple adultery case involving the city's water chief. The job pulls him into a web of corruption around a drought and a powerful landowner, Noah Cross, played by John Huston, while his growing bond with the mysterious Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) leads him toward dark family secrets.
