Terry Gilliam's 1995 science-fiction mystery follows James Cole (Bruce Willis), a prisoner from a grim underground future who volunteers to travel back to the 1990s. His task is to gather information about the deadly virus that killed most of humanity and the mysterious Army of the 12 Monkeys. Landing in the wrong year, he is locked in a mental hospital, where he meets psychiatrist Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe) and the manic Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), and starts to doubt his own sanity.
