The Mummy is a 1999 action adventure film written and directed by Stephen Sommers, a loose remake of the Universal classic. In 1920s Egypt, former legionnaire Rick O'Connell, played by Brendan Fraser, guides the bookish Evelyn Carnahan and her brother Jonathan to the legendary city of Hamunaptra. There a rival expedition reads from the Book of the Dead and wakes Imhotep, a priest buried alive for his forbidden love, who sets out to restore his body and bring back his queen with plagues, sandstorms and armies of the dead.
