Modern Times is a 1936 comedy written, directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin in his last outing as the Little Tramp. Working on a speeding assembly line, the Tramp is driven to a breakdown, mistaken for a communist agitator and thrown in jail, then teams up with a homeless gamine played by Paulette Goddard. Almost silent, with music, sound effects and a famous nonsense song, the film turns the Great Depression and industrial life into timeless slapstick and warm optimism.
