School of Rock is a 2003 musical comedy directed by Richard Linklater and written by Mike White. Jack Black plays Dewey Finn, a passionate but unemployed guitarist who has just been kicked out of his band. Desperate for rent money, he takes a substitute teaching job at a strict private school by pretending to be his roommate Ned Schneebly. When he discovers his students are gifted musicians, he forms them into a band to compete in a battle of the bands, while hiding it from the uptight principal, played by Joan Cusack.
