The Bridge on the River Kwai is a 1957 war epic directed by David Lean and winner of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. In a Japanese prison camp in Burma, British Colonel Nicholson, played by Alec Guinness, wins a battle of wills with camp commandant Saito over the treatment of his officers, then leads his men to build a fine bridge as proof of British discipline. Meanwhile an American escapee, Shears, played by William Holden, is sent back with a commando team to destroy it.
