The Elephant Man is a 1980 biographical drama directed by David Lynch and filmed in black and white. In Victorian London, surgeon Frederick Treves, played by Anthony Hopkins, finds John Merrick, played by John Hurt, exhibited as a freak show attraction because of his severe deformities. Treves brings him to the London Hospital, where Merrick turns out to be a kind, cultured man who loves reading and the theatre. As high society embraces him, the film asks what it truly means to be treated as a human being.
