Das Boot is a 1981 West German war film directed by Wolfgang Petersen, based on the novel by Lothar-Guenther Buchheim. In 1941 a war correspondent joins the crew of the submarine U-96 under its weary captain, played by Juergen Prochnow. In the cramped, damp hull the young sailors face boredom, Atlantic storms, convoy attacks and terrifying depth charge bombardments. Praised for its realism and claustrophobic tension, it is one of the most acclaimed war films ever made.
