John McTiernan's 1988 action thriller stars Bruce Willis as John McClane, a New York detective visiting his estranged wife at her company's Christmas party in a Los Angeles office tower. When suave criminal Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman, and his crew seize the building, McClane slips away barefoot and wages a one-man war from the shadows, with only a police sergeant on the radio for support. A sharp, witty thriller that set the template for modern action movies.
