Philadelphia is a 1993 legal drama directed by Jonathan Demme and one of the first major Hollywood films to deal with AIDS. Tom Hanks plays Andrew Beckett, a rising Philadelphia lawyer who is dismissed by his prestigious firm soon after the partners notice signs of his illness. Refused by one attorney after another, he turns to Joe Miller, a television-advertising lawyer played by Denzel Washington who has his own prejudices about gay men. Their courtroom fight slowly changes Joe and everyone watching. Hanks won an Oscar for the role.
