As Good as It Gets is a 1997 romantic comedy drama directed by James L. Brooks. Jack Nicholson plays Melvin Udall, a misanthropic romance novelist with obsessive compulsive disorder who insults nearly everyone he meets. When his gay neighbour Simon, an artist, is badly beaten, Melvin has to look after his dog Verdell, and he grows attached to Carol, a waitress and single mother played by Helen Hunt. Both Nicholson and Hunt won Academy Awards for this warm and funny story of unlikely connection.
