Miloš Forman's 1975 drama, based on Ken Kesey's novel, stars Jack Nicholson as Randle McMurphy, a cheerful troublemaker who gets himself moved from a prison farm to a state mental hospital, expecting an easy ride. Instead he meets the calm, controlling Nurse Ratched, played by Louise Fletcher, and a ward of frightened men, including the silent Chief Bromden. His card games, votes and stunts give the patients a taste of freedom and start a battle of wills with the system.
