Romeo + Juliet is a 1996 romantic drama directed by Baz Luhrmann that keeps Shakespeare's original verse but moves the story to the flashy, violent streets of Verona Beach. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Romeo Montague and Claire Danes plays Juliet Capulet, two teenagers from feuding families who fall in love at a costume party. Bold editing, a pop soundtrack and colourful characters such as Mercutio and Tybalt make the classic tragedy feel urgent and new.
