DreamWorks' 2001 animated comedy, directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, stars a solitary ogre named Shrek whose swamp is overrun by fairy-tale creatures exiled by the tiny tyrant Lord Farquaad. To win his home back, Shrek agrees to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon-guarded tower, with the motormouthed Donkey tagging along. The journey turns into an unlikely romance full of pop songs, parody and gags aimed at classic fairy tales.
